Leave No Trace Ireland receives funding from Leitrim Development Company through the Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure Scheme

Leave No Trace Ireland are delighted to announce receipt of funding from Leitrim Development Company under the 2022 Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure Scheme.

The 2022 Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure Scheme is a Department of Rural and Community Development funding programme, available through development companies and local authorities. This fund emphasises the opportunities for recreational amenities and seeks to support recreational infrastructure that provides an inclusive approach for communities. The 2022 scheme has prioritised projects which have evidence of strong community engagement, with this year’s scheme including a contribution from Fáilte Ireland.

The scheme supports sporting and recreational pursuits. It helps to make use of the resources of the countryside that contribute to healthy active lifestyles. It supports the economic and tourism potential of the area for both local communities and tourist visitors alike.

The funding from Leitrim Development Company will support the Leave No Trace Training Network and enable new training courses in 2023. New education materials will be developed and printed through the fund, to reach communities across Leitrim and Ireland, sharing the Leave No Trace ethos. All the resources will raise awareness around the core Leave No Trace Principles to protect and enhance the wealth of natural and outdoor recreational spaces we have throughout the country.

Over the last three years we have all seen the importance of outdoor recreation for both our physical health and mental wellbeing. Across the country we have all embraced the outdoors, making use of the amazing walking and cycling routes, and generally exploring the extraordinary natural beauty that our natural heritage has to offer. Seeing so many enjoying the outdoors, it is now more important than ever that we learn to protect and care for our outdoor spaces, for future generations to enjoy too.
