  3. Why Leave No Trace?

At the heart of Leave No Trace
are seven principles based on
an abiding respect for nature,
culture and people.

Leave No Trace is an Outdoor Ethics Education Programme designed to promote and inspire responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. As increasing numbers of people seek the beauty and  exhilaration of outdoor travel and recreation, our collective mark on the environment and its natural processes increases. Litter, water pollution, disturbance of vegetation, wildlife, livestock and other people are all indicators of the need to develop a national ethic that protects both natural and cultural heritage. Techniques designed to minimise the environmental and social impacts in these areas are incorporated in and promoted by the national Leave No Trace education programme as the following seven principles:

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
  2. Be Considerate of Others
  3. Respect Farm Animals and Wildlife
  4. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
  5. Leave What You Find
  6. Dispose of Waste Properly
  7. Minimise the Effects of Fire

Respect for our Environment

We respect that while people may hold different views on how to protect our environment, we all work towards a common goal of respect and love for that environment. We believe that Ireland has fantastic ecosystems and habitats that deserve to be respected in their own right and not just because human beings value them.
