Marine Explorer Programme Workshops- Sligo, Mayo and Donegal

March 1, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Explorers Education Programme, funded by The Marine Institute aims to build on Ireland’s marine and maritime heritage by increasing awareness of the value, opportunities and social benefits of our ocean wealth and identity. It is an ideal way for primary school children to learn about nature and the environment and enables them to understand the oceans’s influence on us and our influence on the ocean. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our team of educators have adapted the programme to deliver it online through blended learning modules. Leave No Trace currently deliver this programme in Mayo, Donegal and Sligo.

The workshops include:

– An interactive talk with authentic marine realia, with props ranging from shells and crab claws to whale baleen.

– Tools for investigating the seashore, ie. fishing nets, crab and shrimp pots, field guides, worksheets, clipboards, magnifying glasses, buckets and spades.

– Group work and team building activities, including a lesson on how to collect, record and identify living things on the seashore.

– A lesson on how to recognise and identify animals and seaweeds that typify Ireland’s coasts.

– SESE curriculum: Living Things, Environmental Awareness and Care.

– Green Schools Programme; Theme 8, Global Citizenship – Marine Environment, Theme 3, Water and Theme 5, Biodiversity.
