Strategic Action Plan:  for the renewal of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)

The National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) have announced their “Strategic Action Plan for the renewal of the National Parks and Wildlife Service”.

The NPWS Strategic Action Plan ensures that the NPWS is resourced, equipped, and has a robust organisational structure to deliver fully on its mandate and play its part in Ireland’s response to the biodiversity emergency, on the national and international stage.

In the published forward by Minister Daragh O’Brien, he writes that he is “delighted, together with my colleague Minister of State Malcolm Noonan, to publish the Strategic Action Plan for the Renewal of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Strategic Action Plan has its origins in the Programme for Government commitment to review the remit, status and funding of the NPWS. The independent, multi-phase Review was completed in February 2022 and culminated in fifteen recommendations to renew the NPWS and make it a more resilient, more effective organisation, fit to meet the challenges of the twenty first century. The Strategic Action Plan approved by Government is designed to deliver on those recommendations and its implementation is a key priority for me as Minister.”

The forward continues, detailing how the Strategic Action Plan has its origins in the Programme for Government commitment to review the remit, status and funding of the NPWS. The independent, multi-phase Review was completed in February 2022, and culminated in fifteen recommendations to renew the NPWS and make it a more resilient, more effective organisation, fit to meet the challenges of the twenty first century. The Strategic Action Plan has been approved by Government, and is designed to deliver on the recommendations from the review process, and its implementation is a key priority for both Minister Daragh O’Brien and Minister Malcom Noonan.

Minister Malcom Noonan closes his forward writing how, “over many years, the staff of the NPWS have consistently shown their passion for and deep commitment to nature, and their determination to protect it. Delivery of the actions in the Strategic Plan will be challenging, but I have seen first hand what these dedicated people can do. I am with them in rising to those challenges”.
