SDG Stories: Inspiring the Next Generation: Primary School Programme
As Sustainable Development Goal Champions for 2024/2025, Leave No Trace Ireland is proud to showcase how education is at the heart of our work to protect the natural world.
We are excited to spotlight our Primary School Programme—an engaging, hands-on initiative that empowers young changemakers across Ireland.
Through interactive workshops, students explore real-world environmental issues, build empathy for nature, and learn how to protect our planet using the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace.
The programme supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Communities) 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals)—equipping the next generation with the knowledge and values needed to care for the natural world.
About the Programme
The Leave No Trace Primary School Programme introduces students to the seven principles of Leave No Trace in a fun, interactive, and engaging way. It is designed to:
- Increase awareness of ethical outdoor behaviour
- Strengthen personal connection to nature
- Support critical thinking and empathy
- Explore real-world environmental issues
- Inspire place-based learning and action projects
With curriculum links across SESE, Science, Geography, Maths, SPHE, Language, and Art, the programme promotes a holistic learning experience that’s rooted in sustainability.
How It Works
Delivered by our Accredited Leave No Trace Trainers, the programme includes two half-day workshops:
- Workshop 1: Introduction to Leave No Trace and project preparation
- Workshop 2: Student presentations and deeper discussion
These workshops create opportunities for children to become leaders in their own learning, develop a real-world sustainability project, and see their actions as part of a global effort to care for the planet.
