  3. River Explorers takes off in October

Waterways Ireland and Leave No Trace Ireland have been working in partnership to develop a new ‘River Explorers’ programme. This exciting one day programme aims to enable participants to become aware of the geographical location, leisure potential and biodiversity value of their local river, lake or canal. It will also introduce participants to Leave no Trace and provide opportunities to explore their own behaviour in the outdoors in an interactive, fun and educational manner.

We are hosting a series of one day workshops along the Royal Canal at the 12th Lock Castleknock and Richmond Harbour, the Grand Canal at the 9th Lock Clondalkin and the Shannon-Erne Waterway in Ballyconnell. Each school group will take part in classroom based sessions in the morning followed by outdoors session in the afternoon at their local waterway. Both sessions are packed with interactive and hands on activities which will certainly keep students enthralled!

Environmental expert, David Horkan, will deliver the programme to 17 primary school groups throughout October and November. Participants will discover the vast array of wildlife that call the inland waterways their home! Each group will learn how to identify some of the plants and trees along canal and river banks and come face to face with some mini beasts living in these ecosystems.

We are really looking forward to what promises to be an excellent Education Programme!
