Regenera Project Update
Through this European project, we are working on revitalising our waters through water sports. There are four pilot sites throughout the continent with Lake Keel in Achill being our focus. It’s such an opportunity to learn about the positive effects water sports can have on the eco-system around them. By learning from Lake Keel, we can take these findings and they’ll be used throughout the continent to combat biodiversity loss.
In September, we conducted SWOT Analysis and Vulnerability Assessments on Lake Keel. While the lake is in a good place at the moment, the eco-system surrounding it is quite fragile. With relatively small changes and actions, we’ve learned we can make a big difference. If you’d like to read the assessments, they’re at the bottom of this page.
This lake provides a huge pull for tourists, drives economic growth in the area and offers tremendous scenery for all who are lucky enough to spend time there. By working with local and the water sports providers on the lake, we will be developing an educational package to help inform those who use the lake the most of its importance. We also plan on hosting an event in the locality in 2025 to bring best-practice examples of lake biodiversity regeneration to the area and learn what can be achieved when people work together on an issue like this. We couldn’t do this without the consistent support of the locality and all the water sports providers on the lake who have embraced the project with open arms.
It’s been such a positive 2024, we’re looking forward to seeing what 2025 brings for this fabulous project!
