  3. Leave No Trace Ireland and EcoTrail Wicklow to promote responsible outdoor recreation at the 10th European Ecotrail© Trail Running Event

Leave No Trace Ireland, the Irish arm of the global outdoor ethics organisation, are supporting EcoTrail Wicklow this September

On Saturday September the 28th 2019, County Wicklow will become the 10th European destination to host the epic Ecotrail© Trail Running Event. The concept of the EcoTrail® was born from the desire to create real eco-responsible nature race courses accessible to all in major emblematic cities and their suburbs.

The presence of Leave No Trace Ireland at EcoTrail Wicklow represents a significant opportunity to deliver a joint approach in promoting responsible outdoor recreational activities and activity tourism in Ireland. This event will highlight the natural and cultural environment of Wicklow as it takes participants to some of Wicklow’s most scenic locations. It will also promote eco-responsible trail running and outdoor sports. The event will be a living demonstration that mass events, environmental responsibility and the principles of Leave No Trace can go together.

The Ecotrail event is committed to reducing litter, minimising environmental impacts and promoting the use of public transport. Leave No Trace Ireland will be actively promoting its seven principles and ethos at the event and will be assisting the in the important after-race clean-up of the route.

Leave No Trace Ireland is endorsed by Comhairle na Tuaithe, the National Countryside and Recreation Strategy, and the Northern Ireland Outdoor Recreation Plan as the only recognised outdoor ethics education programme in Ireland that promotes caring recreational use of the countryside. The Leave No Trace message has been adopted by key state and national organisations including government departments, state agencies and national governing bodies of sport, education and training and a range of businesses. These include the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Sport Ireland, Coillte, the OPW, Waterways Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Irish Environmental Network.

Through education, research and partnerships, Leave No Trace Ireland enables and supports individuals, communities, organisations and companies in reducing the environmental impact of outdoor activities including activity tourism.

The EcoTrail® concept was born in 2007 in the suburbs of Paris. The objective of the EcoTrail® is to raise awareness among runners on the importance of eco-responsibility, which has remained at the core of the project since it first started in 2008.
