This year for World Environment Day we are taking a collaborative approach to tackle marine litter and plastic pollution in Achill. Co. Mayo. We invite you to join us on Golden Strand and Silver Strand at Doogort, Achill between 12 noon and 4 p.m.
Fish, birds and other sea creatures swallow pieces of litter that can eventually kill them. Globally at least 43 % of cetacean species, all species of marine turtles, approximately 36 % of the world’s seabird species, and many species of fish have been reported to ingest marine litter. Marine litter can eventually enter the human food chain, when microplastics are ingested by fish or shellfish, which may subsequently be eaten by people. Finally, all this waste ends up costing us through beach cleaning, loss of tourism from littered beaches and seacoasts, fouled ship propellers, and ruined fishing gear.
Pack a picnic and come along to learn about marine ecology and plastics while helping to declutter our beaches of litter!
Free shuttle bus from Mulranny Park Hotel (11:30 a.m.) on June 5th with an additional stop at Achill Outdoor (spaces limited).
A shuttle will operate between beaches on the day to avoid overcrowding with cars.
Leave No Trace are delighted to partner with Mayo County Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Clean Coasts, BIM, Achill Tourism, VTOS and Achill Outdoor who will join together across two beaches to raise awareness of the biggest threats to marine ecosystems.
Lavelle’s Caravan and Camping, The Strand Hotel and Seal Caves Campsite will be supporting us at both beaches.
