On Wednesday 22nd October, Coillte launched a DVD at an event in Phoenix Park. The DVD was produced to showcase the EU funded Woodland Restoration project that is underway on a number of sites across the country.
This is an EU LIFE funded project whose aim is to restore natural woodland habitat by removing non-native trees and invasive exotic shrubs and by reinstating natural water regimes to promote natural regeneration of the priority woodland habitat.
Over the period 2006 to 2009 Coillte has carried out restoration works on 550 hectares of these special woodland habitats. Coillte manages over 15% of its estate for nature conservation and this project is one such example of the environmental work they do. For more information on the project and the sites around the country visit www.woodlandrestoration.ie.
The launch of the DVD coincides with European Forest Week and is one of a number of events Coillte is involved in. The week highlights the contribution of European forests in mitigating the effects of climate change, providing wood and renewable energy, promoting fresh water supply and protecting the environment.
