Leave No Trace Advanced Trainer Course
Leave No Trace is a not-for-profit company made up of organisations with a shared interest in encouraging responsible enjoyment of Ireland’s natural environment. The Leave No Trace education programme strives to inform those who enjoy outdoor activities of their personal responsibility to minimize their impact on the environment and other people though awareness and by practicing some simple techniques.
Fundamental to the success of Leave No Trace in Ireland are its training activities. To enable Leave No Trace Ireland to continue to offer these tiers of training to the public and to spread the message of Leave No Trace Advanced Trainer Course has been organised for Monday 23rd June – Friday 27th June, 2014 in Petersburg OEC, Clonbur, Co. Galway.
The course teaches the “hard skills” like appropriate human waste disposal, good campsite selection and management as well as the “soft skills” – these are the more ethical side of the message dealing with issues like behaviour around wildlife, disturbance of natural and cultural items, social impacts. The course also aims to teach participants how to teach the Leave No Trace message themselves in a non-judgmental, non-sanctimonious way and provides teaching tips to help teach the subject in a participatory, engaging way.
The Instructor course will be delivered by Ben Lawhon, Education Director for the Leave No Trace Centre for Outdoor Ethics in Boulder, Colorado in conjunction with Leave No Trace Ireland. Instructor Courses are typically five-days (mostly taught in the field with overnight camps as an integral element of the course) in length and designed for people who are actively teaching others outdoor skills, providing leadership or recreation information to the public.
