New Development Officer

Leave No Trace Ireland is now operating from CAAN’s (Countryside Access & Activities Network) offices in Belfast. Beverley Pierson, who currently works as CAAN’s Marketing Executive will co-ordinate, manage and promote Leave No Trace on a daily basis whilst
still retaining responsibility for some of CAAN’s marketing activities.

Beverley’s immediate priority will be to build a strong brand for the Leave No Trace message, produce Leave No Trace Ireland’s first newsletter, produce Irish versions of the existing American Leave No Trace training aids, develop a training calendar to ensure the Leave No Trace message is being rolled out across the whole of Ireland and to secure partnerships with Leave No Trace Ireland.

Leave No Trace adopted by National Countryside Recreation Strategy

Leave No Trace Ireland are delighted that the National Countryside Recreation Strategy released yesterday 28th September at the National Ploughing Championships in Co. Carlow by Minister Ó Cuív, has adopted the principles of Leave No Trace as its national message. This comes just a day after the Leave No Trace Ireland programme was officially launched by Duncan Stewart at Scouting Ireland’s headquarters in Larch Hill, Dublin 16.

Launch of Leave no Trace Ireland

“The old code of ‘take only photos and leave only footprints’ is now not enough” according to Bill Murphy, chairman of Leave No Trace Ireland, an exciting new outdoor ethics education programme launched today which promotes better use of outdoor places through education, research and partnerships. “All recreational users must strive to Leave No Trace, so that future generations can continue to enjoy the wonderful country we live in, which unfortunately is beginning to show signs of the increasing pressure from recreational use”, he added. Leave No Trace emphasises that caring for our mountains, forests, pastureland, lakes, rivers and seashore is the right thing to do – the ethical approach – and trains and educates users through a variety of means in ways in which they can enjoy their access to the countryside, but minimise their impact. Co-ordinator appointed

Since January 2004, the Leave No Trace Ireland ad hoc committee have worked to secure the necessary funding to allow the appointment of an All-Ireland Leave No Trace Co-ordinator.

Jane Helps took up this new and challenging position in early July 2006 and is tasked with co-ordinating, developing, managing and actively promoting the Leave No Trace message across Ireland and take over the role currently performed by a few members of the ad hoc committee.  When working in the south Jane will be based in Scouting Ireland’s Dublin Municipal Headquarters whilst accommodation will be provided by the Countryside Access and Activities Network NI when she is working in the north.
