Overgrazing, cutting and trampling and their effects on the ecology of bogs

Research by Dr Fiona MacGowan on the effects of various factors on bog ecology.

Bogs in Ireland have a long history of use by people. In many cases these uses are sustainable e.g. light grazing. In the recent past, however, utilisation levels have increased beyond sustainability. Indeed levels have reached such highs that these various uses are now posing threats to the survival of bogs as a uniquely important habitat in Ireland.
