To meet the needs of educators working with our youth, Leave No Trace Ireland, in collaboration with the Department of Community and Rural Development created an outdoor ethics curriculum specifically for young audiences.  The Leave No Trace Ireland schools programme  is a curriculum intended to promote sustainable use of the Irish countryside. It is based on the seven principles of Leave No Trace.

This interactive, downloadable resource is a great way for young people to learn about Leave No Trace Ireland.

Lessons are designed to be interactive and are a fun way to teach and learn about how to behave in the outdoors. All lesson plans are linked to the primary level curriculum in the Republic of Ireland and offer teachers original and effective models for achieving learning objectives.

We offer additional primary school programmes delivered across Ireland by our qualified Leave No Trace Trainers. Our Trainers are dedicated to delivering fun and interactive outdoor education to primary school groups, promoting sustainable use of the Irish environment based on our seven principles.

Our three programmes are:

1. Leave No Trace Champions Programme
Leave No Trace Ireland is about encouraging young people to discover, learn and connect with nature. The goal is to ensure that our natural world is left in capable hands for generations to come through education from an early age.
The programme aims to facilitate children’s learning by inspiring respect for and raising awareness of their natural environment by:

  • Increasing the children’s knowledge through experience, explanation and questioning.
  • Engaging the children in activities to immerse them in the natural environments and help them to establish sensory connections with it.
  • Helping the children to identify opportunities in their own life where they can apply the principles of Leave No Trace.

2. Leave No Trace River Explorers Programme

This joint programme between Waterways Ireland and Leave No Trace creates an opportunity to involve school children in making a connection with nature and their local biodiversity along their local rivers and waterways.

Ireland has a fantastic network of multi-activity recreational trails, based on or alongside idyllic lakes, canals and rivers that provide scenic routes by canoe, bike or on foot. The increased development leads to welcomed increased use of the waterways for outdoor learning. Our research has shown that when children are connected to nature and their local environment, they are more likely to care for it.

3. Marine Explorers Education Programme

We also offer the Marine Explorers Programme in Counties Mayo, Sligo and Donegal delivered on behalf of the Marine Institute.
